Join us for an afternoon of exploration of the unique stone circles and hidden chambers at the Gungywamp archaeological site.

Less than two miles east of the Thames River and five to six miles from Long Island Sound, the rugged Gungywamp Hill is one of many flat top hills that contribute to a series of stepped, or shingled, kame terraces found along the southern most end of the Thames Basin (gifts from the Wisconsin glacial advance)

The Gungywamp complex of ruins is perched at the summit a kame terrace spanning approximately 24 acres. There are extraordinary stone structures of unknown origin, albeit not without controversy. Around twenty, human produced stone structures can be located. Amongst colonial-style foundations, scattered throughout the complex, are numerous stonewalls. We will explore two rows of standing capstones, with a bird of prey image carved in one of the standing
stones, double-ring of stones (old tanning mill?), and stone chambers (the Calendar Chamber and the tomb chamber).

DETAILS AND DIRECTIONS

We'll be meeting at Shepherd of the Sea Chapel at 231 Gungywamp Rd, Groton, CT (UPPER PARKING LOT) at 3:45 PM. Please do not be late. The afternoon sun will be perfect to illuminate the hidden chamber within the Calendar Chamber.
